How to Build Location Pages That Actually Rank (and Not Get Filtered as Doorway Pages)

Programmatic location pages work, but only if each one earns its place. The difference between a page that ranks and a page that gets ignored is smaller than most people think.

Why most location pages fail

A template with the city name swapped in is a doorway page. Search engines have been filtering those since 2015. If the only difference between your Dubai page and your Toronto page is two words, neither page has a reason to exist.

What a page needs to be genuinely different

Local market context that a person in that city would recognise. Sectors and business types specific to that market. Pricing or currency relevant to that country. Local proof: a client, a case, a landmark, an area name. Local questions in the FAQ. Internal links to nearby areas. Get four of those six right and the page has substance.

Scale without becoming spam

Publish in batches. Twenty pages, then wait six weeks and check indexing and impressions before publishing the next twenty. If pages are not being indexed, the content is too thin and adding more will make it worse, not better.

The internal linking layer

Location pages need to be reachable. Link them from a locations hub, from the relevant service page and from each other in a nearby-areas block. A page that only exists in the sitemap gets crawled once and forgotten.

Measuring the right thing

Do not judge location pages on rankings alone. Judge them on impressions in Search Console for city-modified queries, and on enquiries attributed to those pages. A page ranking fourth for a term that produces three enquiries a month is a success.
